for everyone living in Ireland with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

Tusla Enquiries

If you work for Tusla and would like to get in touch with us, please read the information on this page.

We welcome enquiries from Social Workers who would like to learn more about Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. In the first instance, we recommend you, parents or carers attend our "Introduction to FASD" online workshops which are held monthly. These are designed to provide an overview of the condition including most common symptoms, and also strategies to support children and young adults with some of the challenges that they face.

Online Workshops

To reserve a place on the next "Introduction to FASD" workshop, please click here. The cost for Social Workers and Professionals is €40 plus VAT and Eventbrite fee. If you are paying for individuals, parents or carers to attend, this is at the lower rate of €25 plus VAT and Eventbrite fee. Reservations must be paid online in advance and a VAT receipt will be provided. Due to the nature of this workshop, CPD points are not available. We ask you to be honest about your status when making a reservation, as FASD Ireland is a not-for-profit social enterprise and the provision of online workshops provides us with essential funding to maintain the services we offer.

After attending the online workshop, if you think that the parents, carers or young adult (16+) would like a personal consultation with us, then please get in touch. We regret that we do not currently meet with under 16s. Social Workers are required to be present at all meetings, so that you can take notes of what is discussed through the meeting and allowing you to continue to deliver support based on the guidance we offer.

There is no charge for the use of meeting space in our office for personal consultations.

Pathway to Diagnosis / Clinical Support

We are regularly asked to recommend suitably qualified paediatricians and psychologists who specialise in Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. Ireland does not currently have a pathway to diagnosis, and there is no established clinical support plan offered by the HSE for diagnosis or mental health / health care post diagnosis. The recommendation currently is for you to connect with an individual's GP to request a referral to CAMHs. Whilst this is not what we would like to happen, it is the only reasonable method to begin to get the child or young person assessed.

We regret that at this time, we are unable to provide clinical recommendations outside of your local CAMHs service, and would urge you not to seek private diagnosis, as there are no FASD diagnosis standards or guidelines in Ireland that ensure accuracy and compliance.
