for everyone living in Ireland with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

International FASD Awareness Day

Each September we work with colleagues around the globe to raise awareness of FASD.

Raising Awareness

The 9th of September each year (since 1999) is International FASD Day - representing the 9 months of pregnancy. It is important to raise awareness of the condition and to support those trying to conceive or already pregnant - we can all play our part.

No shame, No blame

We are keen to ensure that the whole month of September is dedicated to raising awareness of FASD and the impact alcohol consumption during pregnancy can have. The families we support have told us that it is important that the message is clear - no amount of alcohol is safe from 6 weeks before conception (for both parents) and during pregnancy.

Light it Red

Last year, FASD Ireland's first International FASD Awareness Day, we were delighted that Clare County Council lit Áras Contae in Ennis red to signify the day.

The colour red was initiated by 'The Red Shoes Rock' movement, started in 2013 by RJ Formanek, an educator and advocate living with FASD. He decided to wear red shoes to stand out, be noticed and open conversations about FASD to raise awareness - it is now used globally to signify FASD.

Further afield, Niagara Falls was also lit red to support the FASD Community.

This year we have written to Mayors and Cathaoirleach in all 32 Counties in Ireland and Northern Ireland asking for their support and to 'Light it Red'.

How can you support the FASD Community on 9th September?
