for everyone living in Ireland with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

Social Welfare

A number of supports are available from Social Welfare to support a person living with FASD

There are plenty of forms to complete once you receive a FASD diagnosis. As we have previously mentioned, FASD is a lifelong disability, and it is really important that you receive the correct support. The Department of Social Welfare have a number of schemes that are designed to support everyone living with FASD.

Domiciliary Care Allowance (DCA)

DCA is a monthly payment for a child with a severe disability. The payment is not based on the type of disability. It is based on the impact of the disability. This allowance is paid to all children under the age of 16. When the allowance is awarded your child will automatically be entitled to a medical card, which is not means tested. Here is the link for the DCA:

Remember there are two forms to complete and send in. Part 1 is for parents / carers to complete and Part 3 is for the GP / Paediatrician / CAMHs Specialist to complete. It also helps to support the application with copies of any reports you have received during the assessment process, along with any letters you have received from school. DCA can be a frustratingly slow and cumbersome application, so it is worth speaking to your local TD if you have not had any progress after 28 days has passed.

Disability Allowance (DA)

If you have a diagnosis of FASD, you may apply for Disability Allowance using form DA1. For more information, please follow
